## Before Session They are preparing to plunge into the whirlpool. ### Whirlpool Stats ![[Gaping Maw.jpg]] ![[Gaping Maw No Grid.jpg]] [Ghosts of Saltmarsh - Adventures - Marketplace - D&D Beyond](https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/gos/of-ships-and-the-sea#TravelatSea) Half a mile across Velocity 45 ft. DC 25. "When a creature moves into a whirlpool or starts its turn there, it must make a Strength ([Athletics](https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Athletics)) check with a DC determined by the whirlpool’s rank. On a success, the creature can move normally. On a failure, the creature is immediately moved toward the vortex’s center at the whirlpool’s velocity, and the creature is [restrained](https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Restrained) by the whirlpool until the start of its next turn. If the creature reaches the whirlpool’s center, the creature is pulled under the surface and either appears at a special location (see “[Whirlpool Destinations](https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/gos/of-ships-and-the-sea#WhirlpoolDestinations)” below) or plunges a number of feet underwater equal to the whirlpool’s velocity." Characters in the water will roll (with advantage if they have a swimming speed) either: - Constitution saving throw: You take a lungful of water, which luckily you can breathe or things would get much worse, but as you try to cough it out you have disadvantage on constitution saving throws next round. - Strength saving throw: You are slammed around, feeling yourself become disoriented and somewhat fatigued, you have disadvantage for the next round on strength saving throws. - Dexterity saving throw: You end up upside down and disoriented, and you have disadvantage for the next round on dexterity saving throws. If they succeed then they take no damage, if they fail they take 4d10 damage. **Leaning towards a total of 12 rounds.** Every round they are in the water there is also a risk of exhaustion from being in the water. Only happens when they are in the water, and only needs to make the save if they failed their other save. They have advantage if they have BOTH a swimming speed and the ability to breathe underwater. - **First fail: DC 3** - **Second fail: DC 5** - **Third fail: DC 7** - **Fourth fail: DC 9** - **Fifth fail: DC 11** - **Sixth fail: DC 13** - **Seventh fail: DC 15** - **Eighth fail: DC 17** - **Ninth fail: DC 19** - **Tenth fail: DC 21** - **Eleventh fail: DC 23** #### Vessels in Whirlpools "The group check represents 5 minutes of work. The check’s DC is chosen or randomly determined by rolling a d4 on the Whirlpool Rank table. The captain, first mate, bosun, and quartermaster each make an ability check, as shown on the Whirlpool Checks table. If no one makes the check for a particular officer, a failure is contributed toward the group check. Also, roll a d20 for the crew, using its quality score as a modifier to the roll, and compare that check to the DC. Determine how many of the group’s checks succeeded — the officers’ and the crew’s — then consult the Whirlpool Check Results table." | Officer | Check | |---------------|-------------------------------| | Captain | Intelligence (water vehicles) | | First mate | Charisma (Intimidation) | | Bosun | Strength (carpenter's tools) | | Quartermaster | Wisdom (Nature) | ##### Whirlpool Check Results | Result | Effect | | ------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | Total Success | Everyone stays inside the boat, the boat takes no damage, they get advantage on next round. | | Success | Everyone stays inside the boat, the boat takes no damage. | | Failure | The boat takes 4d6 damage, everyone needs to make a dexterity or strength saving throw to stay in the boat. | | Total Failure | The boat takes 4d10 damage, everyone needs to make a dexterity or strength saving throw to stay in the boat with disadvantage. | ## During Session ### Whirlpool Encounter **Character Fails for Exhaustion and Other Conditions** - [[Kress]] - - Fails: 3 - [[Leralac]] - Swimming Speed - Fails: - [[Eris]] - Swimming Speed - Fails: - [[Genesis]] - - Fails: 1 - [[Khos]] - Swimming Speed - Fails: 3 - [[Elaine]] - Swimming Speed - Fails: 2 - [[Drop "Boss Hog the Pirate King Period"]] - Swimming Speed - Fails: 1 - [[Burgeon the Surgeon]] - Swimming Speed - Fails: **Rowboat 1:** - 2 HP - On boat: - [[Drop "Boss Hog the Pirate King Period"]] - Captains - [[Genesis]] - Quartermaster - [[Kress]] - First Mate - [[Leralac]] - Bosun **Rowboat 2:** - 4 HP - On boat: - [[Khos]] - Captain - [[Burgeon the Surgeon]] - Quartermaster - [[Elaine]] - Bosun - [[Eris]] - First Mate #### Round 1 ##### Boat 1 Success ##### Boat 2 Success #### Round 2 ##### Boat 1 Total Success ##### Boat 2 Total Success #### Round 3 ##### Boat 1 Total success ##### Boat 2 Failure #### Round 4 ##### Boat 1 Success ##### Boat 2 Success #### Round 5 ##### Boat 1 Failure ##### Boat 2 Success #### Round 6 ##### Boat 1 Success? ##### Boat 2 Success #### Round 7 ##### Boat 1 Failure ##### Boat 2 Success #### Round 8 ##### Boat 1 Failure ##### Boat 2 Failure #### Round 9 ##### Boat 1 Failure ##### Boat 2 Failure #### Round 10 ##### Boat 2 Failure #### Round 11 #### Round 12 They can see and begin trying to grab the ![[Amulet of Elemental Water]] ### After Whirlpool They teleported to the [[The Golden Glass]] [[Drop "Boss Hog the Pirate King Period"]] attuned to the [[Amulet of Elemental Water]].
